From Berlin with Love: Lollapalooza Festival

Golden glitter, circus tents, soap bubbles, dancers, artists, unicorns and confetti showers: Berlin is hosting the spin-off of the legendary US festival Lollapalooza for the third time - this year, it will make its debut on the lush green meadows of the Hoppegarten racecourse. The German capital awaits with a great spectacle of curiosities and a big line-up. Among others: The Weeknd, Imagine Dragons, David Guetta, Kygo and Armin Van Buuren.

Everything is a little bigger in Berlin: the streets, the buildings, the line-ups and the number of festivalgoers. Last year, 70,000 people flocked to Lollapalooza at Treptower Park. This year, the travelling festival is moving on - and transforms the 1060-acre meadow landscape of the Hoppegarten racecourse in the east of Berlin into a colourful playground.

And when we say colourful, we mean it: apart from the outstanding sound, the festival offers good food, street art, fashion - and a grand spectacle of dancers, artists and performances. At Lollapalooza, there’s opera divas floating through the crowds, barons flying through the sky in helium balloons, aging rock stars with broken legs dallying around in wheelchairs, Ferris wheels steadily turning and hordes of mechanical creatures clattering and clanking past. And on top of all that, the festival offers great activities for children, too. All that requires a lot of space - for that reason, camping on the festival site isn’t an option, but of course you’ll find tons of accommodations in and around Berlin.

And by the way: the term Lollapalooza was allegedly coined by a slapstick troupe from the past century called “The Three Stooges” and means something along the lines of “particularly impressive”. And that doesn’t just apply to the spectacular festival itself but also to the outfits of the festivalgoers: golden glitter, voluminous hair, original accessories and unicorn balloons for the wrist are everywhere. Wear whatever you think is fun - and be yourself. A cool black t-shirt and trouser combo is just as on point as Native American-inspired jewellery or crochet crop tops - or just dress up as an oversized ostrich. Berlin is many things - but one thing’s for certain: it’s really quirky.
